OK 74 (North)
(NORTH)

Highway History:
The two OK 74's were once connected. From today's southern OK 74's northern terminus (got that?), the highway continued straight to today's Interstate 35 Exit 106 (OK 9 West), then OK 9 and OK 74 crossed the Canadian River, and then OK 9 headed off to the east. OK 74 continued along mostly the same path as Interstate 35 to Robinson Ave., where OK 74 then went west. Three miles west of the interstate, the highway curved to the north and followed Western Ave. to S.W. 29th St. (which was then U.S. 62/U.S. 277/OK 3). OK 74 then went west on 29th St. to May, then went north on May to Edmond Rd., curved to the west for one mile to Portland, then curved back to the north.

OK 74 was split in two sometime during the 1970s, and the northern OK 74 began at Interstate 44's Exit 124 (N. May Ave.). When the Lake Hefner Parkway opened in 1992, OK 74 was signed along the freeway, so its southern terminus was moved about a mile to the west.

Highway Review:
The northern OK 74 begins at Interstate 44 and OK 66 in northwest Oklahoma City. Its first mile is duplexed with OK 3, and its first seven miles are a 4-lane freeway known as the Lake Hefner Parkway. After narrowing to two lanes at the Kilpatrick Turnpike (the northern terminus of the Lake Hefner Parkway), OK 74 doesn't see another highway until 14 miles later at one of four lettered routes along OK 74, OK 74F. OK 74F connects to OK 33 via Cashion.

Back to OK 74, the highway doesn't travel through too many towns on its 92 mile journey. In Crescent, OK 74C branches off OK 74 and lasts just a few blocks before ending at Crescent's eastern boundary. Seven miles north of Crescent, OK 74D heads to the west and goes to Lovell, a distance of just three miles. OK 164 finds its western end at OK 74 in Covington. OK 74 intersects U.S. 64/412 and adds OK 15 at a diamond interchange off U.S. 64/412. OK 15 and OK 74 are duplexed for 9.5 miles and they head through Garber. OK 74 joins U.S. 60 near Lamont and are joined throughout the town for about two miles. Eight miles after leaving U.S. 60, OK 74 finds its northern end at OK 11 about two miles west of Deer Creek.

Interstate 44 East at Exit 123A - N.W. 36th St. This is the first sign
that OK 74 is about to begin. Interstate 44 traffic must be in the right
lane to stay on the interstate for the upcoming interchange. (Photo

begins at this point as well. (Photo taken 11/6/02)
Interstate 44 exit numbers are still used even though we aren't actually
on the interstate anymore. Motorists who want to get on OK 66 West
exit here, at Interstate 44 East's Exit 123B. (Photo taken 11/6/02)

OK 74 North approaching Kilpatrick Turnpike. Two things to notice in
this photo - 1) the sign gantry is black, and 2) why does the left sign
only indicate that this is Portland Ave.? Shouldn't it say somewhere
that this is OK 74? (Photo taken 11/6/02)
OK 74 North at Kilpatrick Turnpike East exit. This sign gantry is also
all black. The gantries at this interchange are the only ones I've seen
in Oklahoma that are all black. (Photo taken 11/6/02)
OK 74 North at Kilpatrick Turnpike West/Memorial Rd. exit. This
interchange ends the Lake Hefner Parkway and OK 74 becomes a
2-lane road, as you'll see in a couple of photos. Once again, this
gantry is black and there is no sign that OK 74 continues beyond
this point, but it really does! (Photo taken 11/6/02)
OK 74 South at Kilpatrick Turnpike/Memorial Rd. exit. The southbound
exit is simpler than the northbound one, as it lacks direct
freeway-to-freeway connection. (Photo taken 11/6/02)
Freeway ends signage on OK 74 North as the Lake Hefner Parkway
becomes a 2-lane road. A word of warning - the upcoming section of
OK 74 is 2 lanes of hills and a lot of traffic and there have been several
fatal accidents in this part of highway. (Photo taken 11/6/02)
OK 74 North shield as the road transforms from a wide 4-lane
interstate-quality road to a 2-lane hilly, fun ride. See, OK 74 is still
going, it's just that signs at the Kilpatrick Turnpike interchange don't
say so. Actually, it continues for 85 more miles all the way to OK
11! (Photo taken 11/6/02)
