Highway Review: After crossing the Red River into Oklahoma travelers are immediately greeted with Exit 1 for OK 36. The freeway is free for the first five miles, but after Exit 5 for U.S. 70, the H.E. Bailey Turnpike's southern section begins. It lasts until Exit 30 for U.S. 277/281 South and the northern terminus of OK 36. The freeway is free through the city of Lawton (pop. 92,757), which was until a couple of years ago the third-largest city in Oklahoma, but that distinction now belongs to Norman. In Lawton, there are exits for Bus. U.S. 281 (Exit 33), OK 7 (Exits 36A-B), Gore Blvd. (Exit 37), Bus. U.S. 281/2nd St. (Exit 38), Cache Rd. (Exit 39A), and U.S. 62/Rogers Lane (Exit 40A). Exit 38 is a westbound only exit, and the exit ramp heads straight while the interstate juts out to the left. The next few exits after traveling through Lawton are for Fort Sill. Exit 45 is for OK 49 West, which heads toward the Wichita Mountains, and after Exit 46 (U.S. 62 East & U.S. 277/281 North), the turnpike begins once again. Most of the turnpike exits are spaced out by about 15-20 miles. Exit 53 for U.S. 277 North is the final eastbound exit until U.S. 81 in Chickasha (Exit 80). Chickasha (pop. 15,850), home of Jake's Rib (arguably the best bar-b-que around-I highly recommend the sloppy jake) is also served by Exit 83 (U.S. 62/277/OK 9). After that the next exit is unmarked Exit 99 for the H.E. Bailey Turnpike Spur eastbound, completed in 2001, and OK 4 North. Exit 107 (U.S. 62 West/U.S. 277 South) is the final exit of the turnpike. The speed limit falls to 70 with the transformation of Interstate 44 from turnpike to interstate. OK 37 joins I-44 for three miles at Exit 108.
